Worst Road Trip Ever

by John Zakour on July 26, 2010

I’ve been a Mets fan since 1968. I have seen some good baseball and a lot of bad baseball. Heck, I sat through the Vince Coleman era. But these Mets this road trip was if not the worst trip in Mets history it certainly is in the conversation for worst trip.

The Mets went 2-9 that’s two wins and nine losses. Two of the teams the Mets lost too The Arizona Diamond Backs and the Los Angeles Dodgers were slumping before the Mets came to their town. Right now playing the Mets is like taking Red Bull for the opposing teams it really gives them wings. Over the course of this road trip the Mets have scored: 0, 0, 4, 4, 2, 2, 3, 0, 6 (wow), 2 and 0 runs in their games. They have stolen six bases and been caught stealing seven times. They are hitting under .200. They have fallen to 50 and 49, in third place 7.5 games behind the Braves and two behind the Phillies.

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again. It’s time for Jerry Manuel to be let go. Willie Randolph got fired for less. Today for example RA Dickey was pitching well, but then landed awkwardly after throwing a pitch to Russell Martin. Manuel and the trainer came out to talk to Dickey. Dickey said he was fine. They left him in the game. Dickey then proceeded to get Martin out. He got the next batter Kershaw out. But there was something about Dickey’s motion (when fielding a ground ball) that Manuel didn’t like so he came back out again and pulled Dickey from the game. Dickey really argued his case but to no avail he was still pulled. To me this seems like a case of over managing on Manuel’s part. Dickey is a bulldog who wanted to stay in. Frankly the Mets need more bulldogs. If they were going to pull him why let him pitch to two batters? This was just one in a long line of Jerry Manuel making me say, “Why the heck is he doing that?”

The Mets need some sort of change. You can’t fire 25 players but you can one manager.
