The greatest sports interview…ever

by Ben Millikan on September 7, 2010

In case you missed it, logout of Facebook, quit browsing Youtube, stop resending vapid tweets and go now to see the greatest interview in sports history.

I’m not quite sure how to comment on the interview because I am afraid of tampering with perfection. But what I do know from perusing the message boards is that there are some people that still don’t get Brian Wilson’s shtick. There are humor ignoramuses out there that actually think he’s serious. Granted, Wilson’s work on Jim Rome Is Burning was Oscar worthy (even Rome, who’ always cool under pressure, looked a little confounded when Wilson pulled out the gimp mask at the end of the interview), but for those of us who do get it, it is his serious demeanor combined with his off-the-wall comments and uncanny delivery that make him the funniest athlete in professional sports.

It almost seems irrelevant that Wilson is actually leading the NL in saves with 40. After his performance on JRIB, Wilson won’t spend his off-season training, he’ll be preparing for his appearance on Last Comic Standing. Just some of the highlights of his interview included:

- Saying “I got fined for having too much awesome on my feet” when he was fined for rocking orange spikes during a game.
- Reestablishing the fact that he is a “certified ninja” who specializes in mental assassinating.
- Explaining how to get over an oblique injury: “Slam a red bull down and get over it.”

But his best and possibly most sincere response was when Rome asked him what type of guy you have to be in order to become a closer in the major leagues: “You gotta be a little bit off, you gotta have that F-U mentality, not be afraid to lose but be pissed when you do lose because accepting failure is not something that you need to be swallowing.”

I don’t have a dog in the fight of the NL West, but I’m hoping that the Giants continue their winning ways just so I can see more from the “Mental Assassin.”
