The Ghost Of Manny

Watching the Jumbotron
The Rockies placed Manny Corpas on the DL with elbow issues.  The overwhelming consensus is that he will require Tommy John surgery and is done for the year.  Lo and behold, the Rockies claimed Manny Delcarmen from the Red Sox off waivers today have basically replaced one Manny with another.  The ghost of Manny will reappear at Coors Field shortly.

Manny Corpas had a 4.62 ERA Delcarmen 4.70.  Both pitchers suffered through mechanics issues.  Both pitchers went from pitching well to pitching not well at all.  Corpas was 3 and 5 on the season and Delcarmen was 3 and 2.  It almost makes one wonder if they aren’t the same pitcher.

The Rockies replace one right handed reliever with another and it’s like a straight even trade.  And not to the good side I might add.  How is a below average pitcher with poor mechanics going to help the Rockies run at the post season?  I realize they needed to replace Corpas, but to do so with the basically the same guy gets you nothing and it might get you something even worse, if that’s possible.

The Rockies gave up a minor league pitcher that the Red Sox had wanted to draft in 2009 and cash considerations.  The Red Sox don’t get a usable, right now replacement and the Rockies get a ghost of the pitcher they just put on the DL.  I don’t understand this move at all for either team, but definitely not for the Rockies who still have an outside shot of getting into the playoffs.

So, fans beware, if you happen to be sitting at Coors Field watching a game and Delcarmen comes in, don’t be surprised if you suddenly feel as though you are watching the ghost of Manny Corpas striding out of the bullpen.
