Well Chicago, even though you didn’t ask for him, you got him, whether you like it or not. But look at it this way, even if Manny Ramirez’s lackluster, steroid-free, offensive struggles prevent the White Sox from making a run at the post-season, at least you’ll enjoy the Man-Ram show along the way. And in case you didn’t know, it already started during his first press-conference with his new team.
The 13-minute news conference immediately turned into a circus when Manny went Manny and conveniently forgot how to speak English, a la Sammy Sosa. Forget the fact that Manny has never had a problem speaking English in his 18-year event-filled career, Manny decided, at least during Tuesday’s presser, that he would only now be speaking in Spanish. That’s when White Sox bench coach Joey Cora took the podium in order to translate for Man-Ram that the real fun began.
Although Manny (or, Cora, rather) spent most of his time thanking God and refusing to talk about his contrived ejection from his final game as a Dodger, arguably the best moment of the press conference was when one reporter asked whether or not Manny would cut his locks, to which Manny replied: “That’s a stupid question.” (Although, Cora didn’t translate that one.)
When the interview ended a staff member approached Cora in the clubhouse and asked, “Why’d he need an interpreter?” Cora shrugged his shoulders. As the Indians, Red Sox and Dodgers have all already found out, when it comes to Manny, you just don’t ask questions.
And that’s what you have to look forward to until the rest of the season, White Sox Fan. On another note, Manny provided a bloop single in his debut as the Sox won 6-4 over the Indians.
