NL West

The Giants lost their all star catcher to injury this week and the news is apparently getting worse by the day.  Now it appears like that Posey will need surgery for his torn ligaments and broken leg bone.

The Giants were on a roll.  They had taken over the NL West.  They were winning.  Then, just like that, their all star catcher and hitter goes down at the plate after a collision with the Marlins Scott Cousins.  The Giants were in shock.  It took them a while to even confirm the extent of Posey’s injuries even though word had leaked out all over the Internet.  A broken fibula in his leg and three torn ligaments that constitute what the Giants are calling a “severe” injury.

NL West Flip Flop

by Deborah on May 18, 2011

Just last week I wrote about how the Rockies were falling behind in the NL West because they lost a series to the Giants.  Well, look what can happen in a week!

The Rockies are now 0.5 games up on the Giants thanks to some big wins versus the Giants in Denver.  Lincecum had a less than stellar performance and the Rockies finding a rhythm at the plate, they are now on top of the NL West.  The Rockies are now back in first where they have spent much of the season so far.

Rocky Rockies

by Deborah on May 11, 2011

The Rockies are having a bit of a difficult run of late.  It started with the Giants and it is now continuing with the Mets.  Smooth sailing it’s not.

The Rockies had a nice comfortable lead on the Giants in the NL West for several weeks.  They were coasting along feeling good, playing well.  And then it happened.  They went to the bay and played the Giants for a weekend series and lost all 3 games.  They returned back home to Denver to face the very bad Mets won the first game and lost the second.  The weather has delayed play of the third game.

Dodger Blues

by Deborah on May 4, 2011

Word came out today that there is a very distinct possibility that at the end of this month the storied franchise of the Los Angeles Dodgers will not be able to make payroll.   It is sad day for Dodger fans I am sure and a sad day for baseball.

Frank McCourt, the current (on paper) owner of the Dodgers had to borrow 30 million dollars from FOX to cover his April expenses.  The FOX television deal that McCourt has said he has to have in order to keep the franchise afloat seems to be sinking faster than the Titanic.  MLB appointed Tom Schieffer to oversee the day to day operations of the team.  But now it appears that the Dodgers are in a deeper hole than anyone realized.

Hold the champagne

The Giants were hoping that when Barry Zito took the mound today he would somehow revert back to his Cy Young form and lift the Giants over the Padres for their first NL West division title since 2003. Unfortunately for Frisco, Zito’s perormance was rather emblematic of his 9-13, 4.11 ERA season.

Zito went just three innings, surrendering three earned runs on four hits and four walks. Acting as his own worse enemy, Zito gave up consecutive bases-loaded walks in the first and was booed off the field when he was taken out in the third inning. But Giants fans can’t pin the blame solely on Zito for why the champagne needed to be put on ice. If they want to be upset with anyone it’s San Diego’s starter Tim Stauffer. The Padres right-hander gave a clutch performance, allowing three hits in 6 1/3 innings. And in case you’ve never heard of this guy, just know that while he has only had seven starts this season, he currently has a ridiculous 1.85 ERA.

Giants one win from playoffs

For the Yankees, Twins, Rangers, Rays, Phillies and Reds, the postseason starts on October 6th. But for the Padres and Giants, the playoffs begin on Friday in San Francisco where the two teams will compete in a three-game series for the National League West.

The Giants have already won their game today with a 4-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. In order for the Padres to remain two games behind the Giants they must win their game tonight against the Chicago Cubs, otherwise, they face the near insurmountable task of having to sweep the Giants to with a chance to qualify for the playoffs.

That’s What He Said

by Deborah on September 10, 2010

The Delivery
Just a couple of weeks ago, someone said to me “The Rockies are going to be in the playoffs.”  I looked at him like he had lobsters coming out of his head because at the time, the Rockies were 10 games out of first place, the Padres and Giants were winning and the Rockies were losing games.  And I said “No they won’t.”  Who looks dumb now?

It is now September 10.  The Rockies have just swept the NL Central division hottest team on the planet Cincinnati Reds topping it off with a comeback win last night.  The Rockies have a real, live, viable candidate for the triple crown in Carlos Gonzalez.  The Rockies are 7-3 for their last 10 AND they have won 7 games in a row.  This is in the span of about 2 weeks time they have made this turnaround.

Collapse

Rarely have I seen such a total collapse in sports like the Padres.  They were leading the NL west for months.  Up until just last month they were leading by several games over their nearest competitor.  Now, as of today they have lost 9 games in a row.  Collapse may not cover it.

For the last 10, the Padres are 1-9.  They are 2 games over the Giants and only 5.5 now over the Rockies, who they have lost 2 games to already this weekend.  The pitching has gotten less and less effective and the hitting has been hit or miss at best.  It’s been a downhill slide since the D-Backs game on August 26 when they gave up 11 runs and only put up 5 of their own.

The Giants Are Coming!

by Deborah on August 8, 2010

Tim Lincecum!
Don’t look now but the Giants are coming.  Slowly, surely, steadily the Giants have crept up on the Padres to sit now only 1 game back in the NL West.

The Giants have so far managed a split with the Braves with the Sunday game still underway with the Braves currently winning.  The Padres have lost 2 to the D-Backs, which is unexpected to say the least.  The Sunday game of that series is about to get underway.  The Giants had to go to ten innings to take the first game from the Braves and were shut out last night.  The Padres lost both of their games to the D-Backs by 1 run.  A very frustrating situation when every game counts.

Wins, Where For Art Thou?

Coors Field
Shortly after the All-Star break, the Colorado Rockies were 1 game out of first place in the NL West.  They were coming up hard and fast on the division leading Padres.  All the media talking heads were throwing their names around to be in post season contention – including me.  They looked to have things well in hand.  Well, not so fast.

The Rockies now find themselves in a 6.5 games back hole.  They have lost 4 games in a row.  Looking almost nothing like they did after the All-Star break, the Rockies have steadily fallen back to 4th place in the NL West.  The Giants have pulled to within 3 games of the Padres while the Dodgers are only 0.5 ahead of the Rockies.
