The Boston Red Sox are currently 6½ games in back of the New York Yankees in the American League East. Just yesterday it would have seemed that the Red Sox would stay the course and give the Yanks a run for their money in taking over the division, but with the recent season-ending injury to first baseman Kevin Youkilis, Boston will now be lucky to even make it to the playoffs.
In a season that has marred the Red Sox with injuries, Youkilis is the most recent Red Sox player to go down in the line of duty. With a tear in a muscle in his right thumb, Youkilis became the fifth member of Boston’s Opening Day starting lineup and 14th Red Sox player overall to spend time on the DL this year. By far the team’s most consistent and productive hitter of 2010, Youkilis will undergo season-ending surgery to repair the tear in Cleveland on Friday. Read more... With only two days left for fans to cast their vote for the final players in each league to be named to their respective All-Star teams, the races are heating up.
Over in the American League, Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis just passed right fielder Nick Swisher of the rival Yankees for the leader in votes. However, unfortunately for Youkilis, the first baseman left Tuesday’s game with the Tampa Bays with what the team reported as pain in his right ankle. There wasn’t a specific moment during the game when Youkilis appeared to injure himself, but while preparing for his second at-bat, Youk stepped outside of the batter’s box gingerly before dropping to the ground where he was attended to by the team trainer. The extent of the injury is still unknown, but if it sounds like it’s anything remotely serious, Youkilis won’t participate in the All-Star game if he wins the fan vote.
