Colorado Rockies

A breakdown of the Colorado Rockies recent arbitration/free agency period.

One Year Contract: J.C. Romero.

Traded To Rockies: Tyler Chatwood, Tyler Colvin, DJ LeMahieu, Guillermo Moscoso,  Josh Outman, Zach Putnam, Marco Scutaro.

Exercised Option: Jason Giambi.

Minor League Contract with Other Teams: Jorge Cantu, Aaron Cook, Matt Daley, Cole Garner, Edgar Gonzalez, Kevin Kouzmanoff, Joe Mather, Jim Miller, Kevin Milwood, Jose Morales, Ryan Spillborghs, Eric Stutts.

Arbitration Avoided/Deals Reached: Dexter Fowler.

The Rockies have agreed to a 3 year $31.5 million contract (pending a physical next week, with 32-year-old outfielder Michael Cuddyer.  But when he puts on a Rockies uniform he will be much more than just a left fielder.

Cuddyer is one of those rare players who can contribute to a team on multiple levels.  He can play both corners of the outfield but he can also play first and third base.  With the Rockies giving veteran first baseman Todd Helton days off to rest at the end of his career, Cuddyer fits in well as a replacement on those days when Helton doesn’t play.  He also can fit into the lineup in several spots as well.   The Rockies could use him at #5 behind shortstop Troy Tulowitzki or at #6 if the Rockies want the left-handed-hitting Helton to continue to bat behind Tulowitzki.

SteroidsJust when baseball thought it was out of the steroid-laden woods, Mike Jacobs’ name pops up.

Jacobs, a Colorado Rockies minor leaguer, made history Thursday by becoming the first North American professional athlete to be suspended for testing positive for human growth hormone.

According to the commissioner’s office, Jacobs is the first athlete in any North American professional sport to test positive for HGH. The only positive test anywhere involved British rugby player Terry Newton, in 2010. While other professional athletes have been suspended because of evidence that they used, possessed or obtained HGH, this instance with Jacobs is the first positive test since blood testing of minor leaguers began in July 2010.

Who says baseball isn’t a contact sport?

After being hit in the head by a line drive in the second inning of Friday night’s game, Rockies pitcher Juan Nicasio underwent neck surgery early Saturday to stabilize a fractured vertebra after being struck in the head.

That’s right…a line drive in the head off the bat of Washington‘s Ian Desmond caused a fractured vertebra. The force of the liner was so great that the ball actually smashed off of Nicasio’s head and bounced back into foul territory.

Rockies trainer Keith Dugger did not give a definitive prognosis on the 24-year-old Nicasio, but was upbeat about his progress.

Wait Until 2015

The Rockies took a huge gamble at the trade deadline and shipped off arguably one of the best pitchers they’ve ever had for a group of 4 prospects from the Indians.  One of which they aren’t even allowed to actually have until after August 15.  It’s a big risk that will likely not pay rewards until several years down the line….if it does at all.

The Rockies traded away star pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez.  He is the Rockies only pitcher in their history to throw a no-hitter, win 19 games in a season and start an All-Star Game.  The Rockies are now hoping that Drew Pomeranz will fill the place of Jimenez, but in interviews they can’t even mention him by name until AFTER he is full available to them, August 15.

Mark EllisThe Colorado Rockies may be three games under .500 and 6½ games back in the NL West, but that doesn’t mean they don’t think they can’t make the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

In order to help their chances, the Rockies bolstered their infield by acquiring veteran second baseman Mark Ellis from the Oakland Athletics on Thursday. In exchange for the 34-year-old Ellis, the Rockies sent minor league right-hander Bruce Billings and a player to be named to Oakland.

The Rockies have gone through four different second basemen thus far this season (Jose Lopez, Chris Nelson, Jonathan Herrera and Eric Young Jr.) and are hoping that Ellis can provide some stability for them up the middle.

So Jason Giambi is 40 years old.  He hit 3 homeruns and drove in 7 runs on Thursday versus the Phillies to lead the Rockies to a 7-1 drubbing of the NL East leaders.

Giambi was all over the Phillies Kendrick’s pitching.  Kendrick helped out by making a couple of costly errors in getting the ball hanging over the plate.  But Giambi, who is indeed 40 years old and has lots of gray hair, made him pay.  And not just once.  But three times and for 7 RBIs.  Giambi was seeing everything that was coming across the plate and he was letting it fly.  Old is only a state of mind apparently in Giambi’s case.

Rocky Rockies

The Rockies are having a bit of a difficult run of late.  It started with the Giants and it is now continuing with the Mets.  Smooth sailing it’s not.

The Rockies had a nice comfortable lead on the Giants in the NL West for several weeks.  They were coasting along feeling good, playing well.  And then it happened.  They went to the bay and played the Giants for a weekend series and lost all 3 games.  They returned back home to Denver to face the very bad Mets won the first game and lost the second.  The weather has delayed play of the third game.

Rockies Rocking It

by Deborah on April 15, 2011

The Colorado Rockies are rocking baseball in the early going.  They now hold a 10 and 2 record on the season and have recently been putting the wood to the New York Mets.

The Rockies are currently rolling in the NL West beating almost all comers at this point.  Over the past few days, they  have put the Mets down four games straight.  In a doubleheader yesterday, the Rockies downed the Mets with a total of 15 runs.  The Rockies will leave New York with a firm grip on the NL West and with an offense that is just on fire.

Hot Stove Roundup – Rockies

by Deborah on January 14, 2011

The Rockies have chosen the go with what you have approach for the most part.  They have let a few outer aspect players go and made only one real pick up this off season.  They have decided to go with the roster that gave them such a good season for most of last year.  They gave big contract extensions to Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki this off season and are keeping their team built around those star players.
