It’s July and I’m back with a few random thoughts.
Wow, I had forgotten Jay Peavy was still in the majors. He’s actually having a decent year for the White Sox at 6-5 with a 2.96 ERA, 101 K’s and a 0.99 whip. He may not be that guy who won a Cy Young for the Padres in 2007, but still solid numbers.
The Yankees got a nice pitching performance from Kuroda yesterday. He’s been solid this year. I thought the Yankees made a mistake going after him but I may have been wrong. With CC and Andy Pettitte out for a while, Kuroda (and Nova and Hughes) will have to step up.
Right now the Mets may actually be in better shape then the Yankees. The Mets certainly have a stronger 1-2 punch in their starting pitching with Dickey and Santana. Dickey has been just plain lights out. Also, it’s still unbelievable to me that the Mets are third in the NL in scoring. It’s not so much that the Mets are strong, it’s just hitting is down all over the league but especially in the NL.
Thome to the Orioles is a good deal. Nice to see the O’s as buyers this year.
Met Pete Rose over the weekend in Vegas at an autograph signing. My son and I had him sign a photo of him beating up Buddy Harrelson from that classic 73 series. Mr. Rose signed it, “He won the game. I won the fight.” We then asked him if he thought Jeter had a chance to break his hits record. He shook his head and said, “Nope, he’s already going downhill.” Pete Rose really should be in the Hall of Fame.
Caught a Triple A game yesterday as the Rochester Red Wings played the Scranton (well Empire State) Yankees. Always a fun time. I love the fact that Scranton plays so many games in Rochester this year while their stadium is being remodeled. Scranton is loaded with guys who have spent time up in the Bigs: Cervelli, Laird, Cust, Branyan, Pena, but I don’t see a lot of long term future help coming from that team. Hopefully Betances and Banuelos will live up to their potential, but so far this year they both have losing records.
