A loss is a loss but some losses hurt more than others. Last night the Mets lost to the Cardinals 8 to 7 in thirteen innings. That was a loss that really hurt. Why? Well for one thing they lost a late night extra inning game and now they have to get up early today to play a day game. Talk about a tough nights sleep. To make it worse the Mets had their ace Johan Santana on the mound. Santana had been hot but not last night. He gave up 6 runs in the first. He left the game after 5.2 innings having given up 7 runs all earned. (He could have used some fielding help, looking at you Jose Reyes but still it was a bad night for Santana.) Despite Santana’s off night the Mets came back scoring 4 in the eighth inning to tie the game. Pedro Feliciano pitching in his second inning in the thirteenth didn’t quite have it. He hit Schumaker with a pitch and then walked Lopez. He ended up giving up a run scoring single to Albert Pujols. You can’t really blame Feliciano. Feliciano has already pitched in 57 games this year. If this continues he will pitch in 91 games. That’s a lot of stress on the 33 year old left arm. To make matters even worse this was a home loss, we expect these types of losses on the road where the Mets are extra bad.
The thing that makes this loss extra super duper (yes I wrote super duper) is that this could have been the Mets second win in a row. The Mets haven’t won two games in a row in over a month. This I am afraid to say is the sign of a bad team. I’ve said it once I’ll say it again, it’s time for a new manager.
