No Remorse

Phillies/Nats (July 31, 2010) - 4
Nyjer Morgan feels absolutely no remorse for any of his actions that led up to his 8 game suspension, or so his statements would make it seem.  Morgan received an 8 game suspension for a series of events that included the brawl with the Marlins.  But he has no remorse apparently.

Morgan said and I quote, “Man, they threw the book at me.” Morgan told MLB.com. “What did I do? I feel I haven’t done anything. I knocked over a catcher … they threw the ball at me. Come on, what am I supposed to do? I have to take this and try to keep playing.” And Morgan further said and I quote, “I feel I haven’t done anything wrong except for playing the game hard and play the game like it supposed to be played,” Morgan said. “Wow. I don’t know what else to say. I don’t think you should be suspended for hitting a catcher. … I don’t understand what I did wrong to get an eight-game suspension.”    Morgan has apparently boiled his 8 game suspension down to just the Marlins incidents.  What about his throwing of the ball into the stands? Maybe he forgot that.

Morgan wasn’t the only player suspended for the Marlins brawl.  Several players and managers from both sides received both suspensions and fines.  Morgan was the steepest of the penalties as MLB added in the previous night’s catcher slam to the brawl.  Morgan was already suspended 7 games for the fan incident.  Morgan could be looking at 15 days of suspension at the end of the season if his appeals go unheeded.  He has appealed both suspensions.

Morgan’s plowing of the catcher was uncalled for.  His fan interaction was definitely out of line.  He took the first pitch that hit him from the Marlins and he should have taken it and gone on about his business.  In my opinion, he had it coming.  However, Volstad should have NOT thrown the second ball behind Morgan.  That was just baiting a confrontation.  One pitch at him, where he was uninjured, fine.  Another pitch in the same game behind him, no.    Morgan, should not have charged the mound, but he did.  Volstad should not have thrown the pitch behind Morgan, but he did.  Now the Nationals and the Marlins are faced with multiple suspensions and fines and Morgan apparently didn’t learn anything and he definitely has no remorse.
