Mets Fan 2010 Survival Guide

by John Zakour on February 8, 2010

New York Mets MascotI started watching the Mets way back in 1968. Not sure why I started watching those loveable losers, probably because they were what I could watch on our cable TV. The Mets in 1968 weren’t very good but they showed promise. They had some kid named Seaver and you could tell he was going to lead the Mets to better things. Sure enough the Mets won it all in 1969. I thought, “wow it’s easy being a Mets fan.” Since that thought the Mets have won ONE more World Series. So I have learned some ways to cope as a Mets fan. As we watch the Mets play this year just keep remembering:

1) Hey it could be worse. Look at the Cubs they haven’t won in a century.
2) Well we made a world series in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 00s. That’s pretty good.
3) Our new stadium is sweet, especially if you don’t like homeruns.
4) Bill Buckner.
5) Two of our announcers played on that great 1986 team. So listen to them thinking back to different time.
6) Remember we have all stars at Third, Short and Center, a great number 1 pitcher and a strong closer. (Try to forget about: First base, Second base, Catcher…)
7) At least we don’t have to learn any new starting pitcher’s names this year.
8) We give the Washington Nationals hope.
9) Tom Seaver still stops in from time to time.
10) Nolan Ryan started with the Mets. That’s something right? Right?
11) While no Met pitcher has ever thrown a no hitter or perfect game: Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Mike Scott, David Cone and Dwight Gooden have all left the Mets and thrown no hitters or perfect games. That’s something to be proud of.
12) If 2010 is like 2009 we’ll get to meet a new Met General Manager in 2011!!
