Matt Holliday Whatcha Waiting For?

by John Zakour on January 3, 2010

The Cardinals have a deal on the table for Matt Holliday. It seems to be a pretty sweet deal, 6 or 7 years at around 17 million a year. This will add up to a nice 9 digit figure. A great pay day for a really good outfielder. The funny thing is Holliday (who has Scott Boras for an agent) hasn’t jumped on this offer. He probably should, cause if he’s waiting for a better offer I don’t think it’s going to come. No matter what Mr. Boras may be saying or even praying for.

Holliday, who is 29, is a good bet to hit somewhere around .315 with 25 homeruns and 110 rbi and has a lifetime OPS of .932. All fine numbers. Thing is the Cards already have a guy on their team who averages 42 homeruns, 129 rbi with a .334 lifetime average and a 1.055 OPS. This man is of course Albert Pujols, certainly one of the top 3 baseball players on the planet. The Cards are “only” paying him around 14 million a year. Albert is only signed with the Card through this year. You can bet the Cards want to keep him. Heck, who wouldn’t? You can also bet Albert, who is also 29, is going to want more money than Holliday. I’m guessing Albert will be looking for at least 21 million over 6 years.

The Cardinals realize that for ever dollar they give Holliday, Pujols is going to want more money. The Cardinals also realize they appear to be the only team bidding for Holliday. Therefore their bid is not going to rise.

So Matt Holliday (and Scott Boras) what the heck are you waiting for? You got a really good deal on the table from a really good team. You seemed happy playing there last year. If you don’t take the deal soon you’re going to come off looking both greedy and needy and nobody wants that. Just take it and get ready for the season. (The other outfielders on the market will thank you.)
