Christmas has come and gone and the Mets while signing pitcher Kelvim Escobar still seem no closer to signing outfielder Jason Bay or catcher Bengie Molina. The Mets have had offers on the table all month and it is apparent now that both players rather go to the dentist for daily root canals than put on a Mets uniform. I say, if you can’t be good at least be proud. Stick to your guns Omar and don’t raise the offers a cent.
Actually I will go one better. Tell Jason Bay take the offer as is now or it’s gone. There are a lot, a real lot of other left fielders on the market who can do the job nearly as well at much less the price. The names that spring to mind are Marlon Byrd, Jermaine Dye and even Johnny Damon. (Though he’d be my least favorite choice.) Heck, there are even a couple of ex-Mets out there, looking at you Endy Chavez and X-man Nady, who would be good choices. None of these guys are perfect. But you’re not going to have to break the bank open for them.
As for Molina, I would be slightly more patient only because there aren’t a lot of catching options out there. I also think Molina who can hold down the catching spot for 2 years has a rep of being good with pitchers. Plus he did hit 20 homeruns last year which in Met’s land is a lot. So I would say, “okay, you got 2 days, if you can find a better offer take it. If not take ours or we’re done.”
The Mets have the best offers on the table for these guys. It’s time to stop waiting around for them to receive some magical offer they aren’t going to receive. If they don’t want to play for the Mets find somebody else who does. I’d rather have a happy, only moderately rich player than a sad really rich player. Like I said, if you can’t be good be proud.
