Interleague In Full Swing

by Deborah on June 11, 2012

Today, interleague play gets into full swing with an entire slate opening today and tomorrow between the American and National league teams.

Some of the matchups are going to directly impact some division races and some of the matchups are just interesting on the basis of who is playing.  Some of the more decisive matchups could come from the Yankees/Braves, Angels/Dodgers, Mets/Rays, White Sox/Cardinals.  These matchups could directly affect division races as wins could put some teams in 1st and losses could drop them behind other teams within close proximity in their divisions.  With the tightness of such divisions as the AL East and NL East, wins become very important even interleague wins.

Some of the more compelling matchups may be Royals/Brewers and Pirates/Orioles.  Former Royals pitcher Zach Greinke will be coming back to face his team in this matchup and it should be a very emotional situation for all involved.  For the Pirates and Orioles, it’s the battle of two teams who are trying desperately to have winning seasons after many, many years.  Both teams have started the season well and both would like to continue on their quest for a winning season.

A lot of fans love the interleague play especially for clubs like Yankees and Mets who will meet later on this week.  Some fans though really don’t like it and want play to be confined within the separate leagues.  It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.  There are two more weeks upcoming of interleague play and the results could change some of the top spots in the various divisions across both leagues.  Interleague play is in full swing.
