Okay, the Mets need to make a big splash. Heck they need to make at least two big splashes. Heck, the Mets’ arch rivals the Phils got better (at least somewhat) by adding Roy Halladay. The Mets’ cross-town rivals the Yankees (who I also like, yes I am a strange hybrid _- I know) are not only coming off a World Championship but they also just grabbed Curtis Granderson to patrol center field for them for the next few years. Therefore the Mets really need to make a splash so huge it’s create a tidal wave. Here’s what they do, throw money at Matt Holliday, lots of money. Sure it’s easy for me to say since, well, it’s not my cash; but I’m thinking 8 years at 18 million will be enough to get the job done. Sometimes I don’t think the Mets remember that are a big market team.
Holliday is good for hitting at least .310 with 25 homeruns and is really good at getting on base with a lifetime OBP of .387. He’s a solid fielder except for one very badly timed dropped ball in a very important play off game on national TV, but we can’t hold that against him. (Though some Cardinal fans might.) Sure, hitting in the cavernous Citi Field isn’t anywhere near as friendly as hitting in Colorado, or for the matter even Oakland and St. Louis. It is entirely possible that some of Holliday’s stats will trail off in Citi field. Still, his output would be superior to anybody else the Mets could send out there. Having Holiday in left would give the Mets something they really haven’t had since the days of Kevin McReynolds, a solid all around player. Sure the Mets would have to deal with agent Scott Boris, but sometimes to get the good you must deal with the bad.
