Heyward Is Not The Braves’ Savior

Hank wasn’t a savior either…just a good player.

Jason Heyward is this big-bopper for the Braves that everyone is swooning over here in Atlanta.  Frankly, it’s getting annoying already.

First, you’ve got all the people lauding his bat (which is very good) and saying he’s a great fielder and a nice guy.  Fine.

Then you’ve got all the people saying that Chipper and Brian McCann think he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread.  Fine, but that’s annoying too.

Then you’ve got all the people wondering if Frank Wren will have this kid on the opening day roster.  Who cares?

Why?  Well, besides the fact that Frank Wren couldn’t GM his way out of a paper bag I’d say it’s pretty obvious that this one dude cannot do it by himself.  Yes, they have good pitchers and good “this and that”, but all that means is that they have good players.

You know what else it means?  He only gets one year of Bobby Cox.  What if Bobby retires and they can’t find a suitable replacement for him?  What if his talents go completely unutilized because the team goes into a retro-free-fall reminiscent of the 80′s?

Is Heyward your savior then?

If Frank Wren keeps this kid in the Minors at the beginning of the season everyone will complain.

If they don’t start 15-0 with him IN the lineup–everyone will complain.

If he doesn’t hit 50 homers this year–everyone will complain.

At some point Atlanta fans got a little crazy about how the team is built and have started hanging their hats on individual players and what they don’t realize is that the great teams from the 90′s had ZERO Hall-of-Famers–except for the pitchers.

Jeff Blauser and those guys were just good players who knew their roles.  They weren’t saviors–they were players.

So is Jason Heyward…I hope they figure this out sooner than later or we can call this kid Jeff Francouer 2.0.
