We’ve still got close to a month left in this season, but one team has it pretty much clinched. It looks like the stone cold (though not quite as cold as the San Diego Padres) Pittsburgh Pirates seems to have clinched the worst record in baseball for 2010. Take that Washington Nationals no third first draft pick in a row for you guys! Take that Baltimore Orioles , sure 51 wins to 86 losses is bad but the Pirate are the best at being the worst this year. Yes sir, the Pirates are 45 and 91 they would trail the O’s by 5.5 games.
You have to give the Pirates credit they are pretty much failing on all levels. They have a run differential of -274. Yikes, no other team is under -190. In comparison the Yankees are +183. Heck, the lowly Mets are +12. The Pirate are well balanced losers their stats are: hitting .240 (29th in baseball), 104 homeruns (24th), 455 runs batted in (29th) and they have 1076 hits (also 29th). As bad as the offense is the pitching has been more offensive. The stats are: ERA of 5.21 (30th), 844 Ks (27th), 26 saves (26th), 1.51 whip (30th). Back in 70s when I was kid the Pirates were a proud organization. Now they haven’t had a winning season in 17 years.
Speaking of sad, the Padres have lost ten in a row. The Padres now only lead the San Francisco Giants by one! The Colorado Rockies are still in the hunt just four out. Hang on folks this is going to be exciting. The Giants and Padres play four games at the end of the week. The good news for the Padres is they can’t stay this cold that long. Plus the Giants have only beaten the Padres two times this year. My thoughts are the Padres are due to start winning, especially since the Giants have such a hard time beating them. Thing is all the pressure in the world is now on the Padres. I had been betting on them, now I’m not so sure. We’ll know a lot more a week from today.
