Okay, I know it’s still only spring training. Okay, I know these games mean close to nothing. Okay, I know it’s even early in spring training so these games mean even closer to nothing. Still I can’t help seeing some positive signs in the Mets.
I watched the game on WPIX yesterday (and once I got over the fact that it was the Mets not the Yankees on PIX) I was able to come away with some good thoughts.
First, David Wright had a hard hit double to right field. Ralph Kiner remarked that that ball was hit harder the opposite way than any ball Wright hit last year. I agree. If Wright (who seems more comfortable at the plate this year) hits that way all year he will have a good year.
Second, Ike Davis continues to impress crushing a double. The Mets other first baseman (for now) Daniel Murphy also looks more comfortable at the plate with his new stance. I am starting to think Nick Evans’ time with the Mets is limited.
Third and probably most important, the Mets newest Japanese import, H Takanhashi looked very strong in a 3 inning outing giving up 1 hit, no runs and striking out 6. Putting him right in the mix for the number 4-5 starter or a long reliever or the 8th inning guy.
Fourth, backup catcher Omar Santos hit an inside the park grand slam. No big deal really I just wanted to type that cause it probably won’t ever happen again.
On the down side, Oliver Perez was well, Oliver Perez, going 3 innings, giving up 7 hits, 5 earn runs, 1 homerun and walking 2. Sigh. I guess the good news is he threw 33 strikes in 49 pitches. Olver Perez, so much talent so little consistency.
