MLB Playoffs – Round 1

by Deborah on September 30, 2011

The first round of the MLB postseason begins today.  In what is sure to be either games of blowouts and sweeps or down to the last game battles, the MLB postseason is ready to kick off later today.

Since I don’t have a favorite horse in the race, I will attempt to pick objectively who I think will win each matchup of the first round of the playoffs.  Sounds easy enough….though picking baseball rarely is.

Then There Were Six

by Deborah on September 23, 2011

The MLB regular season is now down to 6 games.  It has come down to this for many teams and after the next 6 games we will know who makes it to the post season and who doesn’t.  Nothing like waiting to the last minute to get the job done for some teams while others are comfortably awaiting the end of the season so the playoffs can get started.

Mariano RiveraIt was been said for some time now, but Monday New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera made it official: he is the top closer in baseball history.

The ageless wonder, who seems like he has been closing games for the Yanks since…well, since forever, recorded his 602nd career save in the New York Yankees‘ 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins, placing him alone atop baseball’s career saves list.

Rivera retired shortstop Trevor Plouffe on a ground ball to second base, forced right fielder Michael Cuddyer to fly out to right and then, in dramatic Rivera fashion, blew a fastball past first baseman Chris Parmelee for strike three to end the game and wrap up save No. 602.

When your equation is going badly, call on Sylvester StalloneYou probably have a better chance of picking the winning lotto numbers than predicting an MVP in baseball.

At least with lotto numbers there is no grey area—either the numbers match up or they don’t. But MVP voting gets much more ambiguous.

Quick, who won the MVP in 1942? If you answered Ted Williams, the guy who won the Triple Crown that same year, then, believe it or not, you’d be wrong. Williams actually still lost the MVP by 21 points to Joe Gordon of the Yankees that year. Williams absolutely owned Gordon in almost every meaningful statistical category, but he was still deprived of the MVP honor.

No Answer

by Deborah on September 5, 2011

The middle of the series win notwithstanding, the Red Sox had no answer this weekend for the Rangers and that could be big trouble come the post season.

The Rangers put 28 runs on Red Sox pitching over the weekend.  On Friday night, the Red Sox were unable to generate even a single run in a 10-0 shellacking.  The Rangers were on everything and anything coming across the plate.  The Red Sox had no answer.

Meanwhile, the Yankees were continuing to win benefiting from a weekend series against the Blue Jays.  The Yankees now on a 4 game win streak have put 1.5 games between themselves and the Red Sox.  With time ticking away for the season, even 0.5 games can be a lot.

Home of the OriolesWhen it comes to rescheduling games, teams can be pretty picky about their new start times.

But the New York Yankees may have stepped over the line with the recent events that occurred as a result of Hurricane Irene.

The Baltimore Orioles and Yankees (reluctantly) agreed to play the makeup of a game rained out due to Hurricane Irene on Sept. 8. Apparently, the Yankees were initially against the idea of playing on that date because it was one of their two remaining off days.

This didn’t sit too well with Orioles director of communications Greg Bader.

Due to Hurricane Irene ripping through the eastern coast of the United States, several MLB games had to be postponed over the weekend:

  •  New York Yankees/Baltimore Orioles doubleheader – The afternoon game will be held on Sept. 8, previously an off day for both teams. The time of that game will be announced at a later time. The game originally scheduled for Saturday night will become part of a split doubleheader on Sunday.
  •  New York Mets/Atlanta Braves games – The games will be made up as a single-admission doubleheader Sept. 8.
  •  Florida Marlins/Philadelphia Phillies game – Major League Baseball announced Thursday that it moved Sunday’s game between the Marlins and Phillies to 1:05 p.m. ET Saturday. However, because of Irene, the game has been postponed and will be made up Sept. 15 at an undetermined time.

At the end of three innings during Monday’s afternoon game at Yankee Stadium, the Oakland A’s held a commanding 7-1 lead over the Yankees.

It would all downhill from there for Oakland.

The Yankees bats came alive the next five innings as they became the first team in major league history to hit three grand slams in a game. Robinson Cano, Russell Martin and Curtis Granderson were there heros for the day, leading the Bronx Bombers in a 22-9 beat-down over the Oakland Athletics.

“You’re not going to see it again, probably,” said captain Derek Jeter. “You can’t explain it.”

The scary thing is the Yankees could have added to their grand slam total. Jeter himself batted a whopping four times with the bases loaded and drove in one run.

Showdown Time

by Deborah on August 5, 2011

It would come to this.  Everybody knew that it was coming.  It was only a matter of time.  Yankees vs Red Sox for the top spot in the AL East.  The showdown starts tonight.

It is August 5.  The records are identical 68-42.  The teams are tied for the top spot in the AL East.  Fenway Park is the OK Corral of baseball starting tonight.  Which team will be left standing when it’s all over in 3 days.

The Yankees have played better baseball over their last 10 games with an 8-2 record.  The Red Sox have gone 6-4.  The Yankees have won 7 games in a row to get to this point in time.  The Red Sox are 35-21 at home, not overwhelming odds in their favor to be hosting the game, but still they are at home.

Flip The River

by Deborah on August 3, 2011

Word is trickling out that Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez is under investigation by MLB for participation in illegal, underground poker games.  This comes as A-Rod is on the DL rehabbing his torn meniscus.  It is also not the first time he has been warned about this very same thing.  But there is a lot of speculation and very few facts as yet.

The world that MLB is investigating him for underground poker game participation is fact.  Not speculation.  After that, things tend to get hazy with speculation, heresay, second hand reports, etc.  There is enough information coming out though that it has prompted MLB to investigate the situation.
