Who would have ever thought that the next great rivalry in professional baseball would be between the Washington Nationals and the Tampa Bay Rays?

Well, that’s probably not entirely accurate. One interleague three-game series in the middle of June can hardly constitute as a rivalry. Yet if you talked to either manager, you’d think the two teams have been at each others’ throats for years.

A war of words took place via the media between Nats manager Davey Johnson and Rays skipper Joe Maddon after Rays pitcher Joel Peralta was ejected during the eighth inning of Tuesday’s game for having excessive pine tar on his glove. The catch is that it was Johnson who came out and told umpire Tim Tschida that Peralta had the foreign substance on his glove. And oh, by the way, pitched for the Nationals in 2010.

The Washington Nationals have decided they can’t wait any longer for closer Brad Lidge to regain the swagger he had in 2008 when he recorded 41 saves for the Philadelphia Phillies en route to a World Series win. The Nats designated the struggling reliever for assignment Sunday and activated reliever Ryan Mattheus.

The straw that broke the camel’s back came when Lidge allowed three runs in Washington‘s 7-2 loss to the New York Yankees on Friday. Lidge was also the losing pitcher against New York on Saturday, giving up two runs in the 14th inning of a 5-3 defeat.

Here Comes Trouble

The Braves are in trouble and it’s coming from all sides.

Let’s start with the biggest trouble coming the Braves way this weekend and that’s Brandon Beachy to the DL.  Beachy has been by far the Braves best pitcher this season.  He is also at the top of the stats for the entire Major League.  To lose him is a huge blow for the Braves especially now when they have not been playing their best baseball of the season.

Beachy started to experience some elbow soreness on June 7 against the Blue Jays.  He was given three days rest before the latest start and starting the game everything seemed fine as he retired the first 11 batters he faced.  However, when the fourth inning rolled around, he started to lose velocity and control.  Beachy said he knew that his curveballs were not going to reach the plate and he said that this time it felt different and so he decided to stop pitching.

Don’t ask Bryce Harper clown questions. He won’t answer them.

The Washington Nationals rookie has yet to settle into the major league lifestyle and already he has his first YouTube hit thanks to a Toronto reporter.

Following Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, a game in which Harper hit his seventh bomb of the year, the 19-year-old was asked by a local reporter—because it’s legal for 19 year-olds to drink in Canada—if he was going to go get a celebratory beer.

Harper’s priceless response: “That’s a clown question, bro.”

The video now has 321,363 YouTube views, which is nothing compared to sneezing pandas and waterskiing squirrels, but it’s impressive nonetheless.

We’re Number 2

by Deborah on June 11, 2012

The Braves did just about everything they could over the last 8 games to try and get into first place in the NL East.  But just about everything wasn’t good enough.

The team was 8-2 over their last 10 games.  They won six games in a row.  They got to within one game of the Nationals in the NL East.  But the Nationals swept the Red Sox and the Braves lost the last game in the series with the Blue Jays and they find themselves two games back, again, just like they were before the win streak started.
