Maybe Next Year

by Deborah on June 17, 2012

I realize we are not even to the All-Star break but there are several teams that should already be thinking about next year.  For these teams, this year is probably already lost not even halfway through the season.

In the American League, the season is probably all but lost for the Red Sox, the Twins and the Mariners.  These teams are all more than 7 games out in the respective divisions.  The Red Sox are 7.5 games back in the AL East.  That might not seem like a lot but in that division it’s like an ocean of space.  The top three teams in the AL East are separated by 3.5 games.  They are all playing well.  The Red Sox 7.5 games in this division look like some other teams 11 games back.  They just don’t have the team to compete with the Rays or Yankees this year and they are not going to anytime this season most likely.

It wasn’t the most conventional no-hitter in MLB history, but no hits is no hits, and in the case of the Seattle Mariners, six arms were better than one.

The Mariners pitched the fourth no-hitter of the major league season Friday night and by far the most unique.

Kevin Millwood pitched six no-hit innings before being forced to leave with a groin injury, but that didn’t stop the Mariners’ bullpen from keeping the Dodgers‘ lineup hitless through the final three innings.

Millwood, along with relievers Charlie Furbush, Stephen Pryor, Lucas Luetge, Brandon League and Tom Wilhelmsen tied the record for the most used in a no-hitter in the Mariners’ 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Rangers Lead The Way

by Deborah on June 5, 2012

In the American League, the story for the first full week of June remains much the same as it has been for the entire 2012 season – Rangers lead the way.

The Texas Rangers are still the best in the American League after 55 games.  The Rangers are 32-23 and have a .582 winning percentage.  Of late though, they have fallen off a bit going 5-5 over the last 10 games.  It has done little close the gap between other teams in the AL West however.  The Angels have been playing much better ball than earlier in the season going 7-3 for their last 10 but they are still 4.5 games behind the Rangers.  Tampa Bay and the White Sox lead the AL East and Central divisions with the exact same records 31-23.

Andy Pettitte’s return to Major League Baseball didn’t quite go the way he’d probably envisioned, but after 19 months away from the game, the 39-year-old looked as comfortable as ever on a mound rocking pinstripes.

Struggling Seattle Mariners veteran Kevin Millwood spoiled the homecoming, allowing just three hits in seven innings, helping the Seattle Mariners avoid a three-game sweep with a 6-2 win over the New York Yankees.

Although Pettitte suffered the loss—allowing four runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings—the buzz around Yankee Stadium, in the stands and the dugout, was all about the return.

“I thought it was so awesome. I was so excited. I know we lost today and that’s what a lot of people are going to focus on—I could really care less about that,” Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher said. “We got our boy back.”

Leading The Way

by Deborah on April 21, 2012

In the American League, the early start to the season has become a tale of one team and the rest of them.  The Rangers are far and away leading the AL and everyone else is just tagging along for the ride at this point.

The Rangers in 13 games to start the season are 11-2.  They are 9-1 for their last 10.  They have won 7 games in a row.  They are a perfect 6-0 on the road.  They have an .846 winning percentage that is far and away better than the rest of the American League.  The Rangers started the season looking to be the team to beat and they have shown that prediction to be true so far.

Whirling Darvish

by Deborah on April 9, 2012

The much anticipated debut of the Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish happens later today against the Seattle Mariners.  It will be the first time many have seen Darvish pitch in a real game, but not the first time for one Mariners‘ player.

Yu Darvish will make his MLB debut against a Mariners team that has started the season 3-1.  He will face Munenori Kawasaki, his former Japanese World Baseball Classic teammate.  Kawasaki has seen Darvish work up close and knows a little bit about how he works.  For the rest of us, this will be a brand new experience.

Darvish posted impressive numbers in Spring Training this year going 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in four Cactus League starts, with 21 strikeouts and eight walks in 15 innings pitched.  That’s not too bad at all.

I do not want to sound xenophobic, but the opening series of the Major League Baseball season should be played in America and not Japan. It is hard to call the opening series in Japan a failure if you are with the MLB, as the combined attendance was reported at over 87,000. It has become somewhat of a tradition for baseball to have at least some openers in Japan, the Mets and Cubs played in Japan in 2000, Yankees and Tampa in 2004, and Red Sox and Athletics in 2008. Clubs have also played games in Puerto Rico and Mexico.
