I realize we are not even to the All-Star break but there are several teams that should already be thinking about next year. For these teams, this year is probably already lost not even halfway through the season.
In the American League, the season is probably all but lost for the Red Sox, the Twins and the Mariners. These teams are all more than 7 games out in the respective divisions. The Red Sox are 7.5 games back in the AL East. That might not seem like a lot but in that division it’s like an ocean of space. The top three teams in the AL East are separated by 3.5 games. They are all playing well. The Red Sox 7.5 games in this division look like some other teams 11 games back. They just don’t have the team to compete with the Rays or Yankees this year and they are not going to anytime this season most likely.
Montana baseball players are getting more and more recognition as the years go on. In recent years, players in the region have been drafted by a variety of MLB teams and this year there were three of them.
The first was Justin Black, who I wrote about in a previous article, taken in the fourth round at 149th overall by the Atlanta Braves. Black was ranked at 100 on ESPN’s Top 100 Prospect List and had been looked at by several MLB teams and the Rays were also in on him at the draft. He has played and is playing this summer for the Billings Scarlets, an American Legion team. He has also played for some traveling clubs and at tournaments showcased mostly in Arizona where he could be seen by MLB scouts as well. However, scouts actually came here to the great Rocky Mountain west to scout him as well. Black also signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Nebraska.
Over in the National League, the delightful Dodgers continue to lead the way. Maybe not as brightly as early in the season, but they are still tops in the National League.
The Dodgers have been the cream of the crop in the National League for the entire season. The team’s sale finalized seems to have rejuvenated the Dodgers and given them a whole new lease on life as it were. Last season, they were in the pit of despair and this year they are the best in their league. Over the last 10 games, the team has had a bit of a stutter going 4-6 but still holding a 3 game lead over the Giants. The rest of the NL West is trailing badly with the Padres continuing to occupy the cellar 16 games back.
I was in San Francisco for a conference and I could not pass up the opportunity to see a game at AT&T Park, which is said to be one of the nicest stadiums in baseball, and it lived up to its reputation.
In the spirit of San Francisco it seemed right that as we walked to the stadium that a flash mob of cyclists appeared, blocking traffic. It is not every day that topless women and naked men biking and roller blading in public! Well it is not common practice in New England.
Unlike my trip to Yankee Stadium last year, and the $175 ticket, Giants tickets were much more reasonable and we were able to buy really good seats for $80. Since this was probably going to be my only visit to AT&T Park I thought why not splurge and get really good seats!
The National League is a very different story from the American League in the early going. While the American League has one team that seems to be far and away better than all the others, in the National League several teams are keeping pace at or near the top of the standings.
There are three teams that are leading the way in the National League with almost the same records to start the season. The Washington Nationals are 11-4, the St. Louis Cardinals are 10-4 and the red hot Dodgers are 11-3. These teams are a combined 25-7 over their last 10 games. They are all well over .500 to start the season. The wealth of winning is spread over all three NL divisions as well.
The San Diego Padres are not a very good baseball team. The team is currently just 3-11 and sitting in the cellar of the otherwise competitive National League West. The Padres traded away their best starter, Mat Latos, to Cincinnati during the offseason. The current San Diego lineup features little in the way of serious offensive threats and the team has already been outscored by 17 runs.
Third baseman Chase Headley may be one of the few bright spots for the Padres. Headley, a one time a top rated prospect, has exhibited lackluster offensive production to this point in his career. The now 28 year old Headley is off to a hot start to begin the 2012 season. In the Padres’ first 14 games Headley has smashed five doubles, four home runs and drawn 13 walks. The four home runs matched Headley’s total for all of the 2011 season.
