On this trade deadline the Philadelphia Phillies have been busy making moves. Some may call them good. Others may call them bad. They got rid of two of their best outfielders, one of who we acquired last year at the trade deadline.
Shane Victorino is going to the Los Angeles Dodgers. In return the Phillies are getting relief pitcher Josh Lindblom and starting pitcher prospect Ethan Martin. It was also said they will be getting a player to be named later and cash. This ends a eight year run for Victorino in Philly, a fan favorite. As a Phillie he had 88 home runs and 390 RBI. He also is a golden glove winner and a two tome all-star. This is a big loss for the Phillies. He will be missed.
Cole Hamels is now the second highest pitcher in Major League Baseball, second to CC Sabathia. The Phillies offered him a six year deal that is worth 144 million dollars. It also has a limited no trade super vision. This means that Hamels will not be a free agent at the end of the season.
Many thought that Hamels was not going to be a Phillie after the trade deadline July 31st. They thought that the Phillies would not offer Hamels the deal that he wanted. However Hamels said that he wanted to stay because of the fans. He also wanted to stay because of Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee.
The Philadelphia Phillies return to Citizens Bank Park tonight after being away on their second longest road trip of the season. The results of that road trip were disappointing, just like the whole season is turning out to be.
Many thought the time away from Citizens Bank would be good for the players because they had a better record on the road then at home. Instead it turned into disappointment and an angry, frustrated Charlie Manuel.
Their road trip consisted of games in Baltimore, Minnesota, and Toronto. Three games against each team. How many wins did they have? Only Three. One against Baltimore and two against Minnesota.
I realize we are not even to the All-Star break but there are several teams that should already be thinking about next year. For these teams, this year is probably already lost not even halfway through the season.
In the American League, the season is probably all but lost for the Red Sox, the Twins and the Mariners. These teams are all more than 7 games out in the respective divisions. The Red Sox are 7.5 games back in the AL East. That might not seem like a lot but in that division it’s like an ocean of space. The top three teams in the AL East are separated by 3.5 games. They are all playing well. The Red Sox 7.5 games in this division look like some other teams 11 games back. They just don’t have the team to compete with the Rays or Yankees this year and they are not going to anytime this season most likely.
The Philadelphia Phillies brought Jim Thome back to the team this season for a power bat off the bench and also to play a little first base from time to time since Ryan Howard is injured. He had’t played first base since 2007. The Phillies weren’t quite sure how things were going to play out. However they didn’t get the chance to really see Thome play. He injured himself early in the season and had been on the disabled list since May 2nd with a strained back. This past weekend with the Phillies entering inter-league play Thome came off the disabled list and would be the Phillies designated hitter.
The Orioles are still clinging to a share of first place in the division despite losing seven of their last ten games. The O’s righted the ship a bit by winning the first two games of their series in Boston. Clay Buchholz pitched an unlikely shutout on Thursday, and lowered his ERA to 5.77 in the process, to break Baltimore’s seven game winning streak at Camden Yards North.
The Orioles will play host to the scuffling Phillies this weekend at the real Camden Yards. The once feared Phillies are now an old, injured bunch that has matched Baltimore’s seven losses in ten games. The two teams are very evenly matched with Baltimore scoring just two more runs and allowing just five more runs on the season than the Phillies. The Orioles catch a huge break by missing Cole Hamels in this series. Philadelphia will start Joe Blanton, Vance Worley, and the winless Cliff Lee in the three game tilt.
