The Chicago Cubs return home to the friendly confines of Wrigley Field today to take on the New York Mets.  The Cubs are coming off a 2-4 road trip that included a weekend sweep at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks.  The Cubs will start lefty Travis Wood in Monday’s series opener in hopes of breaking a four game skid.  The Mets will counter with the rejuvenated Johan Santana.  The veteran lefty missed all of the 2011 season due to injury but has been making up for lost time.  Santana is 5-3 with a 3.00 ERA and 1.12 WHIP on the season.

R.A. Dickey is making the knuckleball cool again. Or maybe he’s making it cool for the first time (no offense, Phil Niekro, Hoyt Wilhelm and Time Wakefield).

Regardless if whether or not we see a spike in kids across America attempting to perfect the enigmatic and often capricious pitch, one thing is for sure—Dickey is making knuckleballing look easy.

Dickey became the first major leaguer in 24 years to throw consecutive one-hitters after his dominant performance Monday night. He struck out a career-high 13 and allowed only Wilson Betemit’s clean single in the fifth inning. With the Baltimore Orioles held at bay, an Ike Davis grand slam was more than enough insurance to give the New York Mets the O’s 5-0 win.

The Baltimore Orioles travel to New York to take on the Mets in this final week of Interleague play.  Baltimore and New York are two of the most surprising teams in the Major leagues this season.  Baltimore sits just 1.5 games behind the Yankees for the top spot in the AL East.  The Mets have ridden the fine pitching of R.A. Dickey, Johan Santana, and Jonathon Niese to a record of 35-32.  New York is currently 4.5 games back of the Nation League East leading Washington Nationals.

Orioles’ right-hander Jake Arrieta will face the knuckle-balling Dickey in Monday’s series opener.  Dickey is currently 10-1 with a 2.20 ERA in 13 starts.  Arrieta has been maddeningly inconsistent since starting for the Orioles on Opening Day.  He allowed just one run over seven innings in his last start but for the season Arrieta is just 3-8 with a 5.89 ERA in 14 starts.

Delightful Dodgers

by Deborah on June 5, 2012

Over in the National League, the delightful Dodgers continue to lead the way.  Maybe not as brightly as early in the season, but they are still tops in the National League.

The Dodgers have been the cream of the crop in the National League for the entire season.  The team’s sale finalized seems to have rejuvenated the Dodgers and given them a whole new lease on life as it were.  Last season, they were in the pit of despair and this year they are the best in their league.  Over the last 10 games, the team has had a bit of a stutter going 4-6 but still holding a 3 game lead over the Giants.  The rest of the NL West is trailing badly with the Padres continuing to occupy the cellar 16 games back.
