Opening day is always an exciting time… especially as a Cubs‘ fan. On opening day, no team is better than any other. At the end of the day, some of those teams walk off as losers.
Losing is a feeling all too familiar to Cubs’ fans, so opening day is special because today, the playing field is levelled. It’s the beginning of a season in which anything could happen. And this year, the magic continues into day 2, because today the Cubs were winners.
This was due in large part to superb pitching by opening day starter Jeff Samardzija (this was Samardzija’s first opening-day start.) After allowing the first three Pirates‘ batters to reach, Samardzija retired 23 of the next 25 batters he faced. He struck out nine over eight scoreless innings.
