In the American League, the story for the first full week of June remains much the same as it has been for the entire 2012 season – Rangers lead the way.
The Texas Rangers are still the best in the American League after 55 games. The Rangers are 32-23 and have a .582 winning percentage. Of late though, they have fallen off a bit going 5-5 over the last 10 games. It has done little close the gap between other teams in the AL West however. The Angels have been playing much better ball than earlier in the season going 7-3 for their last 10 but they are still 4.5 games behind the Rangers. Tampa Bay and the White Sox lead the AL East and Central divisions with the exact same records 31-23.
Derek Lowe was never the ace of the Boston Red Sox pitching staff. He wasn’t always a member of the rotation, either. In his time with the Red Sox, Lowe filled every pitching related role the Red Sox asked for, from closing to starting. Throughout his time with the Red Sox, Lowe was one of the most valuable pitching assets at Boston’s disposal thanks to his versatility.
He was also a key contributor in Boston’s 2004 World Series title, winning the deciding game of every post-season series for the Red Sox and helping to end an 86-year championship drought. For their efforts, Lowe and his teammates were awarded World Series rings to commemorate their championship season. However, these rings are often very valuable and may be the target of thieves. Unfortunately for Lowe, thieves did indeed target his ring, as it was stolen in April of 2012.
Apparently the Boston Red Sox main problems weren’t Tito Francona, chicken and beer, or video games. The real problem was always that the starting pitching stinks. Clay Buchholz has suffered from a Brian Matusz/Philip Hughes type regression that has him pitching more like Clay Aiken. Buchholz has been dismal in six starts. The former 17 game winner is pitching to a woeful 9.09 ERA and has already allowed 10 home runs in just over 32 innings of work. Buchholz allowed just nine home runs over 28 starts when he went 17-7 in 2010. Buchholz will look to right the ship at Fenway Park tonight against the Cleveland Indians.
In the American League, the early start to the season has become a tale of one team and the rest of them. The Rangers are far and away leading the AL and everyone else is just tagging along for the ride at this point.
The Rangers in 13 games to start the season are 11-2. They are 9-1 for their last 10. They have won 7 games in a row. They are a perfect 6-0 on the road. They have an .846 winning percentage that is far and away better than the rest of the American League. The Rangers started the season looking to be the team to beat and they have shown that prediction to be true so far.
According to a Twitter report last night from Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports the Cleveland Indians will sign free agent outfielder Johnny Damon. The 38 year old Damon played for the Tampa Rays last season hitting .261 with 16 home runs and 73 RBI. Damon is just 277 hits shy of the 3000 mark for his career.
The Indians are off to a 1-4 start, all at home, and have scuffled at the plate. Given Damon’s age and limited arm strength he’ll likely be relegated to left field or designated hitter for the Tribe. Ironically, the only two Indians currently producing at the plate are DH Travis Hafner and LF Shelley Duncan. Damon could serve as the left handed platoon partner to the right handed hitting Duncan.
The bad feelings that have been escalating when Ubaldo Jimenez was traded from the Colorado Rockies to the Cleveland Indians over the off-season came to a head Sunday.
Jimenez faced his former team for the first time and in the first pitch of the first at-bat, vs. catcher Troy Tulowitzki, the pitch sailed high and caught Tulowitzki on the elbow. Instantly both benches cleared and Jimenez exchanged some heated words with Tulowitzki, as well as throwing his glove on the ground and pounding his chest when Tulowitzki threatened to charge the mound.
Opening Day is filled with a lot of excitement, some nerves, a lot of unanswered questions and sometimes teams that should win don’t and teams that shouldn’t get lucky. Today will likely not be any different. Here are my predictions for today’s schedule of games.
Red Sox vs Tigers – Lester vs Verlander – The Red Sox have much to prove after their debacle at the end of last season and their subsequent house cleaning. Many unanswered questions for the Red Sox to start the season and they will be concentrated on proving that they belong in the elite baseball ranks. The Tigers will continue their push to become one of the elite and Verlander is just the guy to lead them off this year. The game gets national TV coverage today on ESPN2 and there will be a lot of eyes watching, and not just fans of these teams. I think the Tigers behind Verlander come out on top in the end.
