What are the odds Zack Greinke will return to the Milwaukee Brewers as a free agent this offseason?
Greinke was traded to the Angels at the trade deadline due to the Brewers sinking as low as they have all year (thanks bullpen!). However, Greinke is only a loaner for the Angels this season, as he is a free agent after the 2012 season.
The real question is: where will Greinke end up?
The Brewers would love to resign him; they have already reportedly offered to resign him to a Matt Cain-esque,
5-year, $100M+ extension, which he reportedly turned down. To give hope to Brewers fans, Greinke has expressed his love for Milwaukee on several occasions, although the true sentiment behind those comments can be argued.
Well, no. Not by a long shot. But the end result of the recent ESPN bracket challenge says otherwise.
A few weeks ago, ESPN began an NCAA basketball bracket-style tournament called The Battle of the Ballparks to determine the best ballpark in Major League Baseball, as voted on by the fans. It happens to turn out that Milwaukee, for whatever reason, really likes to vote.
When thinking of the best stadium, most people would pick classic stadiums, such as Fenway Park, Wrigley Field and Dodger Stadium, or go with newer favorites like Pittsburgh’s PNC Park or San Francisco’s AT&T Park. The fans who would put Miller Park at the top of their lists would most likely be limited to Brewers fans. Apparently, that’s all that was needed.
Everybody loves a home run. The Home Run Derby has provided some fantastic ones over the years. The 2012 teams have been announced and will face off on July 9.
The NL Home Run Derby team is captained by the Dodgers Matt Kemp. He announced his team on Sunday night, which includes first time participant Giancarlo Stanton, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Gonzalez. Kemp has been out of the game since May 30 with a strained left hamstring but he intends to participate in the Derby. He has 12 homers on the year. Beltran is in second place in the NL with 20 homers on the year. Stanton has 19 and Gonzalez has 17. Kemp had wanted to have teammate Andre Ethier on the Derby team but a strain of his left oblique prevented that selection.
I realize we are not even to the All-Star break but there are several teams that should already be thinking about next year. For these teams, this year is probably already lost not even halfway through the season.
In the American League, the season is probably all but lost for the Red Sox, the Twins and the Mariners. These teams are all more than 7 games out in the respective divisions. The Red Sox are 7.5 games back in the AL East. That might not seem like a lot but in that division it’s like an ocean of space. The top three teams in the AL East are separated by 3.5 games. They are all playing well. The Red Sox 7.5 games in this division look like some other teams 11 games back. They just don’t have the team to compete with the Rays or Yankees this year and they are not going to anytime this season most likely.
The Brewers’ first two games against the Dodgers this past week have proved: small ball is still alive – and still effective.
No, bunting and sacrifice flies are not the most glamorous – certainly when compared to home runs and extra base hits – but small ball can be just as effective, if not more so when compared to getting the aforementioned bigger types of hits.
The effectiveness of small ball is evidenced by the recent two victories of the Milwaukee Brewers over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers came into Milwaukee with a Major League-best record of 9-1, only to be defeated on back-to-back nights by the Brewers’ use of small ball.
The National League is a very different story from the American League in the early going. While the American League has one team that seems to be far and away better than all the others, in the National League several teams are keeping pace at or near the top of the standings.
There are three teams that are leading the way in the National League with almost the same records to start the season. The Washington Nationals are 11-4, the St. Louis Cardinals are 10-4 and the red hot Dodgers are 11-3. These teams are a combined 25-7 over their last 10 games. They are all well over .500 to start the season. The wealth of winning is spread over all three NL divisions as well.
George Kottaras came off the bench in the ninth inning, the Brewers down one to the 9-1 L.A. Dodgers, with runners on first and second and one out. Carlos Gomez was on second and was sure to score on any hit in the outfield and Mat Gamel was on first, the Brewers needing an extra base hit to bring him home.
Manager Ron Roenicke made a risky move pinch hitting Kottaras for shortstop Cesar Izturis. So far this year, the backup catcher had hit 3 home runs in 11 at bats. He was the Brewers hottest hitter, batting above .400. Brewers’ fans must have been thinking about possible extra innings, with no back up shortstop as Alex Gonzalez was visiting his newborn. So either this had to work or the Brewers would have been in an interesting situation going into extra innings.
