18

Tonight, Ubaldo Jimenez goes for his 18th win of the season as the Rockies face off with the Reds at Coors Field in the start of a 4 game series that could impact several post season races and playoff contention teams.  Tonight, could be the start of someone’s race for the trophy or someone’s race for obscurity.

Jimenez is still on the list of Cy Young candidates and the better the Rockies perform the more his chances of winning become.  The Rockies are at home where they perform well and where other teams can find a definite unfriendly confine.  The Reds were 0-7 against the Rockies last year including a 4 game sweep at Coors Field.  But those Reds and these Reds bear little resemblance.  These Reds are red hot and are leading the NL Central by 7 games.   What a difference a year makes.

The Rockies are on their own red hot roll moving up in the NL West as the Padres continue to collapse.  The Rockies are coming off a weekend series win against the Padres which has pulled them to only 4.5 games back of the Padres.  Jimenez is 0 for 4 in his last four starts and has been stuck on 17 for a good little while now. Tonight could be the night he heats up just like the rest of the team and it could pose some big problems for the Reds.  While the Reds are battling the Rockies, the Cardinals will be facing the Brewers, which is definitely the easier of the two series.  If the Rockies were to sweep the Reds and the Cards were to pull of a sweep of the Brewers, the Rockies could find themselves approaching 1st place in the NL West and the Reds could find the Cards breathing down their necks.

Big game, big series, big stakes.  Will 18 be a magic number or a dream killer?
